Highly recommended: Red Tape

Please join us in our second RedTape event featuring the Washington, DC based artist Ryan Hackett. Hackett will discuss the evolution of his work over the last decade from his years as co-founder of the DC artist collective Decatur Blue to his current exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art as a 2009 Sondheim Prize Finalist.

Hackett’s work exists on the line that separates what we consider artificial and what we perceive as natural. Interested in our culture’s need to find comfort and escape through controlled natural experiences, he provides scenarios that look to psychologically dislocate the viewer and provide a space for reflection. Whether he is composing subwoofer bass swells to the tempo of a polar bear’s heart beat, orchestrating live honeybees to perform a set of electronic music, or producing distilled paintings over photographs, Hackett’s work exists in a space where technological evolution and the primal inevitabilities of existence work together as one.

The evening will feature a short artist talk, video projections, paintings, and a new site-specific installation.
